Updates out the wazoo
I just finished letting Windows Update install 3 million updates on my laptop. I noticed that the time was still on the old DST settings. There are all sorts of security updates and IE7, which I only use to communicate with Microsoft. So now when we have to mess with the time change the laptop will adjust itself.

Fastteks
I’ve downloaded a couple of trojans in the last few months and in one case I ended up having to look up the name and type of program it was to download a special program to fix it. The spyware removal software I have been using wasn’t able to find a particular part of the trojan and it kept coming back. In fact, the download that stopped the trojan is a different sort of trojan…seems like the Devil casting out demons. I consider myself fairly savvy with computers. But staying on top of the latest issues plaguing systems is not my job and some of the malicious software out there can do a lot of damage. I might have had to take my computer in to a technician or put in a call to a company like Fastteks dot com. Their work is’t limited to killing viruses and spyware. An hour of work wasted
I copied a file for a friend onto a thumbdrive. I brought it home and was trying to copy the files to the hard drive so I could make an archive out of them for her. The thumbdrive is a SanDisk Cruzer and it has this stupid proprietary browser that takes over whole systems. This happened to me two years ago when I was trying to get a file printed at Kinkos. It got so they were afraid to just yank the thumbdrive. Well I put the thumbdrive in this computer and it crashed the thing…twice. I had been writing something in Notepad for a blog post because it works better for organizing my thoughts and doesn’t RTF the text. Well that’s gone. And I have to start over. So I moved over to the laptop and got the file to transfer so I could archive it and send it. Then I removed the proprietary browser using a utility I downloaded off a forum.

A privacy utility
Years ago at a place I worked at we had a computer in the cafeteria that was hooked up to the internet. So people would surf the net during their breaks and lunches. Well one day I went over to the computer and a porn site was up. I quit the browser and emptied the cache. I did this because I knew that eventually we would lose the priviledge because of a few people with bad impulse control. Not long after that the computer was removed. Now all these efforts were stepping on some toes. I am sure the computer room manager would have liked for us to turn in whomever it was immediately instead of trying to hide the misbehavior. That’s the work environment. I wonder how many people pay attention to their computers at home. We put up firewalls delete our cache and browser histories. We even try to disguise our usernames and passwords. All those things help but there are still ways people can mine data from our computers and cause us problems.
