A few years ago I had to spend several hours in a friend’s garage in January while he did a brake job for me. We all kept coming over and warming ourselves in front of one of his propane gas convection heaters. Since then I have seen these at construction sites and being used by city utility workers in the winter. It is difficult to operate machines when the temperature is in the 30s. Being able to come over and let your hands “thaw” a bit is a Godsend. We have central air here. It might be possible to save on the heating bill by placing a convection heater in the garage and using a couple of box fans set on low. I’ll have to look into the cost and then save some serious shipping fees by going with gasheatersonline.com. For an item like this, I don’t think you can beat $5 shipping on every order. After that I’ll just have to find a source for refilling the propane tanks.

Home Heating: Changing a mindset
When I was growing up we had gas heaters in all the rooms. You turned them on. You turned them off. There was no thermostat or other governor. Unlike the better vent free heaters available today, they did not shut off automatically. So if a situation became critical you may not have known anything was wrong. Then after that we moved into what we thought were more modern surroundings and had central air/heat. Now that I am an adult and pay utilities, I am starting to feel like maybe those old single room units might have been a good idea after all. If I am going to make a conversion like that I am going to need to do some research and find contractors. It is important that any installations be done by a professional. An excellent place to start the learning process is DESA Online. My house has a wood burning fireplace with a gas assist. I’d like to work with a carpenter to remove the chimney and use a gas fireplace.
