Those of you out there who inconvenienced someone in your rampaging behavior to get some object on the day after Thanksgiving ought to have to tell the person you gave it to what it cost. The folks who trampled the Walmart employee to death back in ’05 should have to tell their kids that someone died so they could have whatever it was. The guy who flung a wheelchair bound lady to the ground in the stampede should have to look the child in the eye and say “I knocked down someone your Grandma’s age to get this for you because she was in my way.”

This kind of thing isn’t happening in every single store everywhere in the country during the first hour of opening on Black Friday. The reports come in of injuries, fist fights and the like. And I read them and think, it’s not worth it. Being able to say you got the latest item for yourself or your kid is not worth anyone’s life or health. Stores should spread those sales over the weekend, not open before dawn and make sure there is enough of the hot items so that this riot-like behavior doesn’t happen. The stores could make more money, have happier customers and there would be no deaths and injuries.

Neither of these two scenarios will happen. Stores like creating urgency and scarcity to drive sales and we the consumers don’t have enough independence to see through it all. It’s sad. And I’m way too cynical to think I’ll ever be surprised by people where money is concerned.

Last year I decided to opt out of the seasonal flu vaccine and take my chances. So a year later I have not gotten sick beyond a couple of head colds and a sinus infection. That is including the start of the H1N1 outbreak to date. Now there are two flu vaccines and I have decided to opt out of both. I’m not getting the flu jab and I’m not getting the pig flu jab. Basically I don’t trust it. I don’t trust what’s coming to me in the way of official stories and I am confident I can do a better job of managing my health and building up my immune system.

I’m not sick.

And I’m taking steps to keep it that way. I’m super-dosing vitamin C, taking more mineral supplements, trying to make better food choices, staying hydrated, using hand sanitizer frequently and trying to get more rest. I’m also staying away from social functions whenever possible. I’m not being a complete recluse but I am opting out of a lot right now.

Having Type II Diabetes places me in one of the higher risk groups. The choices and actions I am making and taking right now are in spite of this.

There is a group of viruses that people normally encounter that are lumped under the term influenza. Then there are others, strains that generally don’t have any effect on humans but do strike other species such as pigs, horses and birds. Some of the set of symptoms associated with the flu are the same symptoms associated with the common cold and heavy allergy attacks. This is part of life on Earth and there are two ways out…dying or leaving the planet.

This past week we have heard all sorts of reports of outbreaks of flu infections associated with the outbreaks in Mexico and in other parts of the world. All this reporting with little to no facts causes a form of hypochondria in people not normally known to be hypochondriacs. If left unchecked we reach a point where every cough, sniffle or sneeze is suspect flu-related. First they tell you how many suspected cases there are, then how many are confirmed. People don’t pay as much attention to the second number. All attention gets focused on how many suspected cases there are.

There is a point in the reporting of any ongoing crisis, a threshold, if you will, where if we continue passively to listen we place ourselves in bondage to the speakers. It does not matter whether the reporting is from the mainstream media, often a mouthpiece of the government, or the government itself. It is the endless repetition that is the tool. If a thing can be told and retold often enough it becomes reality to the listener.

It’s time to start taking back our lives from the flu-mongers. Begin to listen critically whenever anyone, myself included, tells you anything regarding this outbreak. If the talking head is saying the same thing it said an hour ago, it’s not talking to you. Its talking to the person who hasn’t already heard. I’m not saying this is not a serious disease and I am not trying to downplay or make light of anyone’s situation who is suffering or knows someone who is suffering from it. My sole purpose in writing this is to encourage reason.
