t’s been a over eight years since the WTC attacks. The world changed that day and it is a very different place, not only because the attacks took place here but because we’ve had to process so much since then. For the first several weeks we went through a period of image embedding. There was a constant barrage of collapse video plus the president at ground zero and mug shots of the 19 alleged hijackers and bin Laden. So around November of 2001 a friend and I agreed we were both “towered out.” With pretty much every major event in life the media always over-saturated us with images of whatever it is. And like a lot of people I had started tuning some of it out.

The phone call is Kevin Cosgrove’s in his last minutes in suite 105 of the World Trade Center. Those of us who are still here have moved on in one way or another and we remember that day in somewhat different ways. I ran across this video and when I heard the phonecall and the screams I realized that the victims in the building have been somewhat overshadowed by the first responders. I guess it’s easier to look at the heroes and the people they were able to rescue than to deal with something as frightening as the caller’s last moments. That needs to change. The horror is part of it and we need to remember that too.

According to this AP story, 9/11 “Mastermind” Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other conspirators in the WTC attacks will stand trial in a NY civilian court.

Months ago when the President started talking about closing Gitmo a coworker said he didn’t want “them” here. His argument was that these people, if found not guilty and let out, would start plotting more attacks and/or would energize their people in the purview of terror. He is certainly not alone and I might have agreed a few years ago. It’s easier to encapsulate a problem rather than dealing with it. Whatever powers or authority that are granted to a government ostensibly for use with or against a specific group eventually get applied to the general population. History demonstrates this tendency. Just look at the way the mission of Homeland Security has expanded to include so-called home-grown terrorists. These men need to stand trial and not simply serve life sentences with no charges, trials or convictions.
