Contact Information Removed

February 2nd, 2008 § 0

I went in and switched the contact information in the website for the property I used to manage. I found out that it hadn’t been updated by the owner and I haven’t been the manager for nine months. I had closed out the PayPal account two months ago. And I had canceled the phone number at the end of April. But the email was still active and someone sent me something from there. So now they’ll have to call the new management company.

It felt good.

The high tech dynamic network software operating off one and several servers is cool.

The training/operating manual consisting solely of emails is not.

Bogus Amber Alert Crap

I just got the Penny Brown email for probably the 6th or 7th time in 3 years. Emailed the person who sent it with the snopes dot com link.

Every time it’s the same email. A 9 year old girl named Penny Brown who has been missing for 2 weeks. I cannot recall whether I have gotten another Amber Alert email ever. I am not on the official email list, if one exists. The same thing happens every time. Someone gets this email. The OMG noise goes off in their head. They half read it. They click the forward button and fire it off to everyone in their address book. It’s urgent, right? Not so urgent that you can’t take a minute to run it through Google, or go to Snopes and check it out. Come on, folks. Emergency people don’t react to hearsay with such reckless urgency. The little girl is not going to die because you didn’t “act now” with your email account. These sorts of mass forwards are just wasting people’s time and not allowing the real victims to get help because people are reading this stuff.

I wonder if anyone has tried to contact the parents of the girl in this photo. According to Snopes the email has been circulating since around 2001. So she’d be 14. Maybe if they knew what was happening with their daughter’s picture they’d get some sort of retraction circulating. Or it’s an old photo and the girl in it is much older and the one who started it all. Who knows?

How easy would it be for one of the internet worm guys to attach something to an email that gets mindlessly mass distributed?

Where Am I?
