I dated this girl once. If you can call it “dating.” I mean we went out once. It was a date. She was a classmate in college and I was attracted to her and she found me…well something. Anyway we were talking. And at some point she brought up the “fact” that “men” are less intelligent than “women.” I am putting all that in quotes because I think that is more of an assumption growing out of sexist bigotry than anything. I’ve known airheaded…no idea how that happened to me…party-persons from both genders. I’ve met smart, driven, ambitious people of both genders. I’ve met evil people of both genders. And I’ve met average people of both genders. The point is knowing that I am more or less intelligent than someone does not increase my intelligence. So what’s the point of holding an unofficial Mensa pissing contest? So anyway, D. said men were less intelligent than women and I didn’t say anything. Then she upgraded her statement to, “I’m more intelligent than you.” And I either didn’t say anything or I said, “uh huh,” in an attempt to acknowledge that I had heard her. Then she repeated it. “I’m more intelligent than you.” I looked at her and I said, “O. K.” I guess she got pissed at me. I couldn’t tell whether she wanted me to argue and defend my gender or curl up in the fetal position in a lowered self esteem soup of hurt feelings and delusions of inadequacy. It was probably the latter. Indifference was not what she wanted from me.

Chapter 2: The Enema

My ex has a son who’d be about 24 now. They have a relationship that is hard to describe. It’s like the umbilical cord is still attached and and there’s a hint of some sort of incestuous carrying on happening behind closed doors from time to time. None of that sentence is true, but they’re definitely closer than normal for a parent/child. At some points I felt I didn’t need to be there at all. They were such a complete unit in and of themselves. It was like we were driving down the road and they’re both in the front seat and I’m stuck in the back window with suction cups. She calls him her best friend and looks at the title of “son” as a mere formality. But any way I digress.

So we’re talking one night and she mentioned that he hadn’t come out of his room all day and thinks that she may have been too hard on him, criticizing him the night before. And she had this to say about his handling of most criticism: “…criticism just washes over him and comes out the way it came, kind of like an enema.” Well criticism from her is like dealing with a drill instructor/psycho control freak. Nothing is ever good enough. If you deviate the slightest bit from how she thinks it should go, she points it out to you and tries to make you feel stupid for thinking differently from her. I doubled my phone minutes so we could talk more and she decided I should have talked to her before doing it and said, “…it’s your money. If it had been my money, we would definitely be fighting.”

Well probably what’s happening is the young man turns to stone in the wake of the tsunami of her criticisms, usually delivered very loudly and phrased in such a way as to put you on the defensive. I think it is a survival mechanism for him. Having to do that may affect him in future employment because he will have a tendency to not listen when bosses are trying to communicate with him for the sake of improvement. I hope he clears out some of the dust and cobwebs of her programming before he’s 40 and bouncing from entry level job to entry level job with no longevity to show for it.
