According to this AP story, 9/11 “Mastermind” Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other conspirators in the WTC attacks will stand trial in a NY civilian court.
Months ago when the President started talking about closing Gitmo a coworker said he didn’t want “them” here. His argument was that these people, if found not guilty and let out, would start plotting more attacks and/or would energize their people in the purview of terror. He is certainly not alone and I might have agreed a few years ago. It’s easier to encapsulate a problem rather than dealing with it. Whatever powers or authority that are granted to a government ostensibly for use with or against a specific group eventually get applied to the general population. History demonstrates this tendency. Just look at the way the mission of Homeland Security has expanded to include so-called home-grown terrorists. These men need to stand trial and not simply serve life sentences with no charges, trials or convictions.
