The darker days of a campaign
On the morning of November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy said to First Lady Jackie, “We’re heading into nut country today…” I strongly suspect that what happened later that day will never be forgotten.
Now while the following quote from Wall Street Journal Online does not surprise me, it does disappoint me.
Someone yelled “Off with his head” at a rally Wednesday for Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin in Pennsylvania. Later that day in Ohio, a man stood outside a rally holding a sign that said “Obama, Osama.” At a rally in Jacksonville, Fla., on Tuesday, someone in the crowd wore a T-shirt depicting Sen. Obama wearing a devil mask.
I do not know why yelling “FIRE” in a theater is not allowed while yelling “Off with his head” in another public venue is. It would seem that both pronouncements could potentially incite riotous behavior. These forms of negativity are things that should be taken as seriously as threats against a sitting president. As I’ve said before here, there is no such thing as safe. Once conversations have been had, decisions made and security withdrawn a person can be left infinitely alone while surrounded by throngs.
