Chapter 6: Abuse as Insurance

About 3 weeks into the 3-month ordeal which came to be known as “The Ex” the attempts at insult began. She remarked on more than one occasion that I was “too nice.” I assume she’s referring to my not road-raging in the living room over insignificant shit. I certainly don’t think she is talking about the flowers I gave her. The insult took shape one Saturday when she said, “I need a man, not a little boy.” Now the first time I heard this I just thought it was a rather odd thing for her to say but didn’t ask what she meant. Later it became part of an argument we had one night.

It wasn’t until even later that the nut really began to crack open. So maybe a month after the argument she brought up this little boy crap again. So I asked her what she was talking about. She said she didn’t feel safe arond me, that she was afraid I couldn’t protect her. She said that she usually gets into relationships with guys who knock her around so that then she’d know they had the ability to protect her.

If you’re not scratching your head reading this I certainly am writing it.

I said, “Look. I’m not going to beat you up to prove to you that I can protect you. That doesn’t even make any sense. What kind of protection are you thinking you need?”

She said, “Well I’ve got a mouth and a temper and sometimes it gets me in trouble.”

So I left that conversation thinking here I am dating someone who goes out of her way to piss off total strangers and then expects me to step between her and a bullet, knife or ass-whipping for something I didn’t even have anything to do with. and I am supposed to do this even if I think she’s in the wrong.

WTF?
