In 1990, Ann ran in the Democratic primary against the former TX Atty Gen. Jim Mattox. Now Mattox had this idea that if he cast enough doubt about Ann’s character based on her being a recovering alcoholic, that he would win the primary to face Clayton Williams in November of that year.
It backfired.
So having secured the party nomination, Ann went on to face Clayton Williams, who had his own crediblity issues to deal with. Mr. Williams had compared weather conditions to rape and said that like sexual assault it was inevitable and that one should just relax and enjoy it.
He also experienced a reversal of fortunes against Ann.
